All staff should understand the importance of preventing transmission of infection and be trained in infection prevention and control procedures (IPC) appropriate to their role. Policies and procedures should be reviewed regularly, and updated where necessary, and training for staff should be provided as required.
Training should be given to new clinical staff at induction and ongoing training should meet General Dental Council CPD requirements. The current requirement is for GDC registrants to complete 5 hours of disinfection and decontamination training within each continuing professional development (CPD) cycle. All training should be documented.
TURAS, provides a variety of forms of training and education in various aspects of infection prevention and control. In Scotland, it is a requirement of the Combined Practice Inspection (CPI) to have completed training in IPC, as provided by the Public Services Delivery (PSD) Scotland Quality Improvement in Practice Training team, and to have developed an action plan.
Ensure all staff receive training in aspects of IPC relevant to their role at induction and that their training is reviewed and updated regularly.
Keep a record of all training.
Keep up to date with developments in IPC and arrange training for staff training (e.g. Quality Improvement in Practice Training: Infection Control and Decontamination provided by Public Services Delivery (PSD) Scotland.
Review and update the IPC policy/ies and procedures on a regular basis and communicate changes to staff (e.g. at practice meetings).
