The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 [1] cover issues such as lifting or moving heavy loads. The Health and Safety Executive provides full guidance on the implementation of these Regulations [2].
In the context of the dental practice, deliveries of stock will require manual handling. In addition, patients with a physical disability might require assistance to access the dental chair. In some cases, hoists might be required [3-5].
Avoid hazardous manual handling tasks so far as is reasonably practicable.
Where a manual handling task is unavoidable, assess the risk associated with the task and take steps to control this risk (see Manual Handling Risk Assessment form).
Provide staff training on manual handling (see Manual Handling Information template), including helping patients access the dental chair.
Document manual handling duties as part of staff contractual arrangements.
