In 2024 the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017 were amended. The PSM Radiation Protection topic has been updated to reflect the amendments.
While the amendments are unlikely to require major changes to current practice, there are additional actions required, which include:
Adequate staff training
Ensure all staff are adequately trained for the roles they undertake, as aligned to the amended Schedule 3 of IRMER.
Equipment inventory
Ensure your x-ray equipment inventory includes relevant software. A template is provided in the PSM.
Employers’ duty to co-operate with other employers
Ensure co-operation between employers, when there is more than one employer involved in delivering exposures for an individual.
Employers’ procedure for Referrals for Dental Exposures
Ensure your Referrals procedure includes a section on processes for “Making, amending and cancelling any referrals for exposure” in line with the IRMER 2024 amendments.
Clinical audit
Employers must ensure that appropriate action is taken in relation to the results of clinical audit. The PSM Record of Audit template has been updated to support this.
Some additional minor amendments and clarifications have been made within the PSM Radiation Protection topic to align with IRMER 2024 amendment.
