WCs

Ensure toilets are not used as storage areas and are kept free of obstructions.

Check alarm systems in toilets regularly.

If there is enough space to approach and manoeuvre through the door, consider modifying a WC compartment so that it meets full wheelchair-accessible standards. Note that professional advice will be required regarding the layout and positioning of fittings before work begins.

In situations where there isn’t sufficient space to provide a wheelchair-accessible WC, consider other improvements that will benefit other disabled customers, including:

  • grab-rails
  • improved lighting
  • contrasting colours
  • slip-resistant, safety flooring
  • outward-opening doors (note that, depending on the layout of the building, space constraints might preclude use of these)
  • avoiding shiny tiles and floors that can cause reflection and glare
